More than 20 Olympic medallists, coaches and additional international athletes have put their names to a letter demanding a end to the death penalty of a boxing champion and instructor, who is on death row in Iran.

Growing Worldwide Condemnation

During increasing global condemnation over the country's increasing application of the death penalty as a means of oppression, the forcefully phrased appeal censures the authorities's verdict to uphold the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

“Competition is designed to encourage faith, togetherness, and courage,” the signatories wrote. “The death penalty of a champion for his political views is a blatant attack on these values and a caution to all sportspeople who attempts to express dissent.

Record of Executing Athletes

The letter pointed out that Vafaei Sani’s case was not unique and underscored the country's history of sentencing to death athletes for their views, for example a football captain, captain of the football side, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the women's volleyball squad. In the year 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year-old Iranian sports titleholder, was also executed.

Additional signatories to the appeal consist of a sailing champion, who captained the pioneering all-female crew in a global yacht race and was the initial female to earn a prestigious yachting trophy; the former captain of the Australian football team Craig Foster; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Arrest and Unfair Trial

The boxer was taken into custody in March 2020. The allegations against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through arson and damage of state assets”. His sentence has been overturned on two occasions but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the third occasion. His legal proceedings was condemned as “deeply biased” by advocates and bodies.

Appeal to International Body

The urging to prevent Vafaei Sani’s capital punishment comes after a 2023 letter to the United Nations official for human rights, backed by over a hundred advocates and groups, urging action to stop the competitor's execution.

Capital Punishment Escalation

As per findings, there is an “execution crisis in the nation, which has attained shocking proportions”. In the year 2023, officials executed at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a forty-eight percent surge on the previous year. In the prior period, statistics showed nearly a thousand executions, constituting the maximum count since two thousand fifteen. More than hundreds of people have been executed so far in the current year.
