Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been a thread holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was persistently working to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
